A web solution is never finished on launch day. Pages change, users grow and the software underneath needs updates. Teams that keep their solutions healthy follow a few simple rules and follow them every time.
First, give every system a named owner. Second, take automatic backups and test a restore at least once a quarter. Third, release changes in small steps, each one tested on a staging copy before it reaches your customers.
- Named System Owners
- Tested Backups
- Staged Releases
- Simple Written Rules
These rules cost very little to follow, yet they prevent most of the outages and late-night fixes we see when we take over an existing project.
Reliable software is mostly habits: who owns it, how it is backed up, and how a change reaches your users.
Write the rules down in one page, share it with the team and review it twice a year.

We now test a backup restore every quarter. It found a problem in our first attempt, so thank you for the reminder.

Naming one owner per system removed a lot of confusion in our team.
